We had a fabulous turnout for our May MTBHerts meeting and our guest professional speaker, Laura Berrill, a journalist and PR consultant. Laura has a wealth of experience writing for a wide variety of publications on a broad range of subjects and as a result, she knows how to write a power ful story as she knows exactly what the press wants. Laura has proven that the research skills she has acquired from her years in journalism are vital when it comes to gaining positive PR for clients. Laura’s talk was “How to raise the profile of your business in the media which gives you credibility as opposed to expensive advertising.”
Laura was a very good speaker for the group. She was open and honest and got straight to the point. She gave us useful tips not only for our press releases, but also on how to get in touch with journalists and how to get them to publish your own story. She taught us that attention to detail is key. When writing a press release, you need a fabulous headline that will grab attention in only 30 seconds, a good quality picture that sells the story (not your company logo) and you need to research your target audience. Laura recommended we read the first two paragraphs of our press release carefully and ask whether there would be any questions about the story. If there are, re-write it! She advised us to think from the readers point of view and to listen to the news for trends in your industry for ideas for stories.
It was a super talk and Laura was very patient and frank with all the questions from the group from people asking questions relating specifically to their own businesses. I took quite literally pages of notes and I expect to be putting them into practise very soon, so watch this space! Laura was very professional in her approach and I gained the impression she would work tenaciously on your behalf as her client.
